The Community Farm is a certified organic farm and social enterprise in Chew Magna. Founded through a community share offer in 2010, the farm is owned and governed by the shareholder members. The farm grows fruit and vegetables on 10 acres of land overlooking Chew Valley Lake and also sells locally sourced organic food through a home box delivery service, at farmers markets, and wholesale.
A main aim of The Community Farm is to create opportunities for people to spend time on the land, experience food growing, and learn more about sustainable farming. The farm is open to volunteers every week day, hosts school visits and corporate away days, runs Community Farmer Saturdays, seasonal events, and learning workshops and courses for children, adults and vulnerable people.
The farm’s online shop sells organic vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy products and groceries for home delivery in the local area. The products sold by The Community Farm are selected on the basis of where and how they are produced and what is in season. The farm prioritises local suppliers that share its vision and aims, and pays them a fair price for their produce.
Income from the trading arm and grant support allows the project to develop. The site has a yurt classroom, cob oven, field kitchen, learning and recreation area, and has ambitious plans for further developments. The farm provides employment for around twenty staff members, mainly working part time.
The farm’s organic growing techniques work in harmony with nature. Amongst the plethora of wildlife living on the farm are skylarks, woodpeckers, lapwings, yellowhammers, buzzards, kestrels, stoats, badgers and deer.
The farm has a market stall at Bath Farmers’ Market every Saturday morning, and at Southmead Hospital every Wednesday morning.
